Blogger Assignment #2

Romanticism was an artistic movement that developed in the 19th century. Writers put their imaginations over reason and intuition over facts. The Romantics was revealed in nature scenes. In this photo, it is mainly based on nature. The trees take up most of the image, and there is an area of water in the background. In the body of water, there are two sailboats. There is also white rocky terrain which shows more nature. The Romantics showed the accent of nature also through the people. The people are very small, and they aren't shown in much detail. The artist of this picture did this to add emphasis on the nature. The lady in the red dress on the left is pointing at something, and the man in the center is looking down off of the ledge. These people are also looking at elements of nature, accenting Romanticism.

Realism was an artistic movement developed in the 1820's-1880's. It portrayed real life accurately and focused on ordinary people with harsh realities. In the photo to the left, there are many traits showing Realism. For example, there is a general standing in the front speaking to his soldiers. The lighting is very real as it it just centered as one fixture in the center of the room. The clothing on the men in this image also shows Realism through the type of fashion the soldier's wore during this time period. The man in the left front corner is taking notes, which shows Realism. Another example is the stance of the man in the blue shirt in the middle front of the photo. His stance shows Realism because it is a standard stance of a man that is listening intently. This photo, overall, shows Realism by portraying the lives of men during this time period. Many of them had harsh realities which were caused by war. This image shows Realism by showing ordinary people during this time period that are dealing with ordinary situations.

Modernism was an artistic movement that was developed in the 1860's to the early 1970's. Abstraction was a major characteristic of Modernism. Modernism used the Iceberg theory, because it left the reader to figure out the story of the image. The image shows part of a story, but some of the story has to be developed. In the image to the left, there may be an implied theme that the viewer has to develop. Modernism leaves the reader uncertain, and the image to the left shows major uncertainty. There is a horse that has a wheel on it, as if it is a motorcycle. There is a Japanese man that is leading the "horse". The horse is constructed out of metal parts after the neckline, but if the front end of the horse is just viewed it looks like a normal horse. The viewer is left wondering, "What is this?" The viewer may try to figure out the purpose of this image.
